Next Steps
Our Next Steps Training Programme gives young people the chance to develop new skills within key industries such as construction, hairdressing, childcare and mechanics to name but a few. The Next Steps programme is responsive to the career aspirations of participants, therefore the programme timetable is reviewed regularly and changed every 6 months to ensure we are providing the right programmes for our learners.
Next Steps is the service for you if:
- You attended a Glasgow City Council School
- You are aged 16-19 and left school up to one year ago.
- You are currently unemployed and looking for training to support you into your next steps
- You have an idea of what career you would like to pursue but need some training, skills, and qualifications to help you succeed
- You don’t know what career you would like to pursue and would benefit from gaining some training and taster sessions in different industries to help you decide what you would like to do.
What does Next Steps offer?
- Next steps provide a range of different hands-on practical training courses with some of Glasgow’s top training providers to help you gain some new skills, qualifications, and experience.
- General employability skills courses to help you create a CV, work on your interview skills, and build your confidence.
- Online career club to help increase confidence, meet new people, learn about various industries and hear from some of Glasgow’s top professionals.
- We partner with some of Glasgow’s top training providers and employers to offer exclusive opportunities for young people registered with the service.
- Progression options at the end of every programme
- Support to apply for college, employment or further training

Next Steps to Construction
Starts Monday 24th of August
This programme gives young people an insight into the construction industry with some practical skills and CSCS Card included. Running for 3 days per week for 6 weeks, at Tigers Construction Academy, Bishopbriggs. This course features hands-on introductions to Concrete, Carpentry and Joinery, Painting and Decorating, Brickwork and more.
Next Steps to Hospitality and Retail
Starts Monday 24th of August
This is an action-packed programme that is filled with hands-on practical hospitality skills such as barista skills, restaurant service, bartending, customer service, cookery and much more! After the 4 week programme you will gain work experience with a top employer.
Next Steps to Fitness
Starts Monday 21st of September
This 4 week programme is for young people who are interested in fitness. Led by DN Training Academy, you be given the opportunity to try various equipment & fitness activities such as cardio, weighted exercise, boxing and group fitness classes. You will work towards achieving 2 accredited qualifications throughout the programme. You will also visit various gyms throughout the city to increase confidence and also make great connections within the fitness industry and have the opportunity to go on a work placement.

This is an action-packed programme that is filled with hands-on practical hospitality skills such as barista skills, restaurant service, bartending, customer service, cookery and much more! After the 4 week programme you will gain work experience with a top employer.
Next Steps to Beauty
Starts Tuesday 22nd of September
This brand new action packed programme gives young people an introduction the beauty industry. The course is 3 days per week for 4 weeks, young people will gain experience and new skills in nails, brows and lashes, make-up, hair-styling and much more. The course includes a qualification and work experience within House of NAF.
Next Steps to Online Find Your Future
Starts Tuesday 22nd of September
Leaving school can be daunting! But what if you are not sure what you want to do? There are so many great opportunities for young people in Glasgow right now and Hub International are keen to take you on a virtual journey to explore a wide variety of different jobs and the cool people who work in them! Join us online for several fun & interactive sessions, take part in quizzes, competitions, workshops, activities and meet inspiring ambassadors from a range of industries, you can even win prizes. What’s more … You can do it all from the comfort of your home on your smart phone!! And if you are feeling anxious or nervous then don’t feel pressured to put on your camera or microphone. You can just listen in and interact in the text box.
Next Steps to Mechanics
Starts Wednesday 23rd of September
We have partnered with GTG training to deliver a 3 days a week hands on practical introduction to mechanics including hand tools, tyres, brakes, body work and spray painting.
Young people will receive a SCQF Level 3 Award for the Introduction to Motor Vehicle Industry and Technologies. Employability skills will be included to get your CV updated with everything you have learned, work experience and an interview for an Arnold Clark Apprenticeship upon completion of the course.
Next Steps to Childcare
Starts Wednesday 23rd of September
Gain an insight into the child and adult care industry with some practical sessions and employability skills. You will gain an SCQF Qualification in Safeguarding Children and Young People upon completion. After completing the course, young people will be supported to progress to Modern Apprenticeships, jobs, college or further training. The course is based at Hogganfield Loch in East Glasgow, 3 days per week for 5 weeks.
Next Steps to Construction

Next Steps to Hairdressing & Barbering
Starts Monday 5th of October
This 6 week course offers an insight into the Hairdressing and Barbering industry. Delivered by Nurture @ Academy, the couse offers industry recognised qualifications, hands-on practical experience, opportunities for work placement and support to progress to further training, apprenticeships and work. The course is based in Shawfield, Glasgow.
